Bez Lightyear

Electioneve

There was a post on some forum that included a clip of a BBC politics show presented by Victoria Derbyshire. The clip featured a Tory talking head ranting on about the Tory's talking point of Labour's "hidden" £2000 tax hike, which had been scrutinised and debunked by various economists. Derbyshire told him it was a spurious claim but he kept banging on about it as if it were part of the Labour manifesto. He refused to back down and, in the end, an exasperated Vicky D basically said "Is this all you have left? Lies?"

It was a major shift in the way the BBC dealt with Conservatives. Throughout Austerity, specifically throughout both Brexit and COVID, the BBC failed on a regular basis to hold the government up to the light. Blatant lies spouted, especially by Boris Johnson, were seldom challenged or fact checked. There's a famous image of Chancellor of the Exchequer Rishi Sunak on the BBC website; a drawing of him as Superman, saving the country with his budget.

Very impartial.

Suddenly, now the Tory government is weak and staring down the barrel of total destruction, the BBC has discovered its teeth and are nibbling away at Tory lies in much the same way it constantly nagged on and amplified tiny Labour problems.

If Labour get into government with this prophecied landslide, I do wonder what type of coverage they will get. Traditionally the Beeb have been pro-government regardless of party but, with a board of directors full of Tory party plants, it might treat the new leaders with a lot less respect than its Tory predecessor.

Time will tell.

Vote the Tories out.
