Cataract recuperation

So day one, post surgery.

Woke up with my eye glued shut with eye gunk. Opened the bathroom door to sunlight streaming in and recoiled like Dracula when a curtain's pulled back.

Managed to find the loo seat with both eyes shut. Got downstairs, boiled a kettle, found a bowl, put boiled water in bowl, found some cotton wool balls, drank a cuppa & had breakfast whilst boiled bowl water cooled.

Found some sunglasses! I'm forgoing my normal specs and trying to manage with just these fake RayBans (Rey-Bers, actually).

Pulled the window blinds closed to help against the sunlight that hurts both eyes. Back to bathroom, pulled off the eye guard and washed the adhesive residue off my face, washed the rest of me. Dried and dressed.

Downstairs, the boiled water is cool enough to wash the crud out of my eye. It's really sensitive to light, so the sunglasses really help.

I have to feed the cats, but the sun is belting down in the conservatory, it's painfully bright even with my shades on. I go and get a baseball cap, which helps a little. Feed cats, clean out litter tray, exit conservatory and pull the curtains half closed.

The whole house is dark, I slink around it in sunglasses like I'm some wretched, reclusive 40s movie star. All I need is a headscarf, mink stole and a long cigarette holder.

As the weeping subsides a little in my eye I notice that the uncorrected vision in my new eye is pretty good. I can read my phone at arms length yet also see the individual slats on the fence at the bottom of the garden.

The prescription for my vision has changed dramatically, my left eye will need a very weakened corrective lens which will hopefully be a lot cheaper (it was £30 with thinning compared to the £180 with thinning for my right). But that's 6 weeks in the future.

So I'm loafing on the sofa doing very little and plan to carry this on until at least Wednesday next week. Then I will assess whether I go back to the office or work from home.

I started this morning off feeling miserable, but as the day has progressed I'm starting to feel a little more positive.

Baby steps. In fake RayBans.
