art imitates life
In my previous post I stated that, if elected to govern, a certain right wing UK political party would implement a campaign similar to the ICE raids in the USA - putting people they felt were undesirable in concentration camps. I noted how badly that would affect the NHS as it seemed to be staffed mainly by non-Brits.
Last night we watched the medical TV drama "The Pitt" - which is set in the ER of a major US hospital. It's the spiritual successor to the excellent ER from the 90s/2000s.
In this one episode, a patient is brought in; an older Latino lady, whose hands are zip tied together and she's escorted by two masked, armed men in urban combat gear. They were ICE agents who had pushed her to the floor in order to cuff her hands and had seriously hurt her.
Within minutes of the armed ICE agents entering the building, half the people in the crammed waiting room got up and left, immediately followed by a large number of non-white staff members. The emergency department suddenly was understaffed.
Art imitated life, held up a mirror for us to see the consequences of a hostile and flawed policy. It's what will happen to our NHS, to our care homes, to all the jobs that White Britons deem to be beneath them. The people who do those jobs will disappear and who will take their place?
